Euro 2016: The Group Stage

The Copa America this year has been quite the goal fest, the group stage of the Euros not so much. Weirdly enough there was a 7-0 win in the semi-finals of the Copa America, Chile getting the better of Mexico and Javier Hernandez, a score-line which of course ineveitably merits a comparison to Germany’s 7-1 defeat of Brazil. In the other semi-final the USA of course lost to Argentina, meaning they’ll be playing Colombia for third place. The final is a repeat of last year’s, Chile v Argentina. It’s strange, the USA opened the tournament against Colombia and it’s how they’ll be ending it. On a similiarly strange note Germany started their tournament preparations against Slovakia and now they’ll be meeting them in the last 16, though their tournament journey is of course unlikely to end there.

Despite the low number of goals and a lot defensive football being played it’s not been quite so bad. True there hasn’t been a huge number of goals, but there have been plenty of exciting ones. Last gasp winners and equalizers have been a key feature. On the one hand it keeps things interesting, at the same time it makes for a very nerve-wracking experience. Especially as far as Albania are concerned. I knew them getting through to the next round was a long shot anyway but it was so damn close. They almost got there, the first half of last night’s games went exactly as they needed them to. But Portugal came back to draw and Ireland somehow got the winner against Italy. The latter in particular is most annoying. Both countries are on my root against list anyway, Italy for that video of Jogi and Ireland for beating Germany in qualifying.

Germany will be playing Slovakia in the last 16 which is most disappointing,  I was hoping they’d play Albania which I know is completely illogical seeing as how that’s a guaranteed defeat for them but it doesn’t matter now. I do still have one of my wildcards left in the tournament though becuase Iceland made it through to the knockout round whcih is pretty incredible. A nation of approximately 330,000 people is up against the fifty somethimg million of England. With Albania out and Denmark not there at all I’m left with Iceland to root for as a second team. The last 16 has thrown up some good draws, not least Italy v Spain. I was disappointed by that at first, it means one of the favourites going out at such an early stage. I’m not now and will be rooting for Spain to win. This is very strange indeed, I have to root for Spain to win. The other game of interest to me is Switzerland v Poland. Two players I like going up against each other, former Freiburg player Admir Mehmedi for Switzerland going up against Robert Lewandowski.

Euro 2016 - last 16I have to admit I had mixed feelings about the expanded format, I know without it teams like Albania would be unlikely to even be at the tournament let alone have a chance of progressing to the knockout stages. It has been a little more interesting than I thought it might be but it still feels wrong, the idea of being rewarded for finishing in third place. Not that it matters now anyway, Albania are out. But at least I got Amir Abrashi’s sticker before that happened, plus three more Germans:

Some of the Jogi ones are from training and some from matches, my favourite one is probably him gloving up or maybe him taking pot-shots at Bastian in goal. And it pains me to say it because I’m not a fan of Mario Gomez at all but his goal celebration with Jogi was quite cool.

Apart from that I think Schweinsteiger’s is my favourite out all of them:

Euro 2016 Panini Album – Hardcover version

Now I’ve got the hardcover version of the album I can start my collection, it’s exactly the same as the softcover version with just two small differences. It has a couple of extra pages for some special stickers, the Coca Cola ones and annoyingly a set of the German team which can only be obtained from Mcdonalds. I’ve got two boxes of stickers to go with it and happily each box contains 100 packets of stickers, I’ve opened 10 so far and already have three Germans. Ironically the second German I got was none other than Marco Reus, ironic seeing as how he just got sent home this week. On the subject of irony I also got the sticker of the Slovenian Dusan Svento, not just his Euro sticker but his Bundesliga one too. The other two acquisitions of note were his Köln teammate Jonas Hector and former Freiburg player Admir Mehmedi. Annoyingly enough Christoph Kramer was not only the first German out of the box but the first sticker too. I’ve gotten several of Amir Abrashi’s fellow Albanians but not the man himself so far, hopefully it won’t take too long to get him:

Stickers of the Day: The First Germans

When I posted the pictures of the Euro 2016 album on Monday I said I hoped I’d have better luck today. Now I meant that solely in regards to stickers and it turned out to be true in this regard. But it also proved to be true in quite another important way. Earlier this evening RB Leipzig lost 1-0 to SV Sandhausen which means if Freiburg win on Monday night against Eintracht Braunschweig there’ll be a three point gap separating them. I have to say I like the fact it’s Sandhausen who brought this about, not just because they too are a south-western team but more because they are a Hansi team. It’s who he played for before moving to Bayern. Thursday night was a huge disappointment, not the game itself. That was absolutely incredible, a true once in a lifetime experience. It’s just the result which is so devastating. Dortmund are only a team I follow because of Matze Ginter and Roman Bürki but I’m still crushed over the result. Not least because it would have meant me getting one over on a Liverpool fan in real life. Though I have to admit if I had to pick I would choose Leipzig losing tonight, Dortmund getting to the Europa League final would have been great but Freiburg first as always. There is at least one upside to Dortmund being out of the Europa League, I’m now free and clear for my Captain America triple bill and don’t have to worry about getting someone to record the game.

Anyhow today’s stickers. I wanted my first German from the Euro 2016 album to be Matze Ginter, Manuel Neuer or Jonas Hector. Unfortunately my first two Germans are none of those. Yet the first one is still special, doubly so in fact. Because the first German is none other than Erik Durm. The reason for him being extra special is I’m working on a story for him and Matze. The second German was Jerome Boateng. In the same lot of packets I also got Robert Lewandowski, fitting seeing as how him and Boateng both play for Bayern. On the matter of things being fitting, it’s painfully ironic that today I get the sticker of Dortmund’s kits for the Bundesliga album:

Euro 2016 Panini Album

I certainly have no complaints about this album, on the Germany page there are stickers of not only Matthias Ginter but also Erik Durm and Jonas Hector. I’m also happy to note that Kevin Volland is nowhere in sight. Another thing which pleases me greatly is the number of stickers to collect, 680 in all, more than there usually is. A fact which means there are players included which otherwise might not be, like Roman Bürki of Switzerland for example. His inclusion however is not what makes me happiest, that is reserved for seeing Amir Abrashi in there. The only Freiburg player in there in fact seeing as how Bosnia didn’t qualify. His first international tournament (and Albania’s first of course) and his first ever sticker.

It would have been too lucky to get him in the first lot of stickers. I didn’t even get any Germans, all I got was a few players with German connections, including two Stuttgart players so obviously they aren’t going to be included here. So all I have to post is Yann Sommer’s sticker of Switzerland and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Here’s hoping I get better luck on Friday.

Stickers of the Day: The Ginter Acquisition

As the title suggest Matthias Ginter is the real capture of the weekend, but I got something equally as special first; Freiburg’s kits meaning I now have both their stickers. I like the fact they were in the same packet, he’s not a Freiburg player anymore but they’re still connected. I also got Jonas Hector’s shiny sticker, good timing considering he got the assist for Köln’s goal yesterday:

After all he scored the very late equaliser for Hoffenheim against Köln yesterday. Though I still maintain he shouldn’t be in the album at all. There’s space for him but not for Matze or Jonas, that’s just wrong.

Euro 2016 Schoolshop Album

I haven’t completed the qualifications album yet but I’m not wasting any time in getting started on the album for the tournament itself. Not the Panini one, I don’t have that just yet. This one is another Serbian one which thankfully has a lot less stickers than the previous installment. It has it’s good points and bad points, the main good point being the fact it has a sticker of Joachim Löw. The bad point is the baffling decision to include Kevin Volland instead of Max Kruse, also there’s no sticker for Matthias Ginter. Hopefully there’s one of him in the Panini album, I could find out now but I’d rather wait until I actually get it. Matze not being in there doesn’t detract too much from my favourite thing about it though, the fact Manuel Neuer is not only on the front cover but is on the front of one of the sticker packets too:

I suppose it would have been too much to hope for Jogi or Manuel in the first lot of packets:
