Today is one year on from that historic semi final. It still seems unbelievable, 7-1. I’ve seen this match at least five times and seen the goals several times by now, and yet it still has a slightly unreal feel to it. In a weird way more so than the final itself. Given how I watched it the first time, that is several hours after the rest of the world, it’s only fitting that tonight is a late night too. Though I’m happy to say it’s for different reasons. Back then it was because I couldn’t sleep at night, I was in my customary summer tailspin. Now it’s not because of that, now it’s because I’m working on three Jogi adventures and I just have to write a little more before going to sleep.
One thing I won’t be doing today is watching the match again. Not because I didn’t watch the others on the dates, or because I’ve got plenty of other things to do, or because I miss Hansi. All those things are true, especially the last one but none of them are the real reason. Truth is, it’s still as thrilling to watch as the first time, a little too thrilling, way too exciting in fact. I don’t want to be all hyped up, not when I’ve got a story to finish and not when I’m already hyped up about getting to order my new Freiburg shirt on Thursday. I will however be having my customary World Cup sandwich, that I will do.
I didn’t think it was possible to like Jogi anymore than I already do and yet something that I read in an interview lately had just that effect. It was the last one he gave before his summer break, just the other week. I can’t remember what the question was but I can remember the part of the answer that I liked so much. He tells how around the 30 minute mark of the match he turned to Hansi and said to him “Hansi, tell me, is this really real, what’s happening here?”
I don’t know why exactly, at least I can’t explain but I really liked that. I wish I had pictures from that point in the match but the last picture I have from the first half is in the 22nd minute.
I got one of my favourite Jogi videos from this match, and one of my favourite ever Jogi & Hansi moments. Both of those are terrific but it’s Manuel Neuer who got the moment of the match, not an on the field one, something he did after the match. Something which I liked enough to make a video of and put online. And just for some extra fun, I made a GIF too. That first and then the Jogi ones:
I wasn’t going to make any videos originally even though I really wanted to make one for this match especially. I went ahead and made one because either way I would have been unhappy, it’ll bug me because the series will feel incomplete but it would have equally bugged me not do make this particular one. It contains some of his best moments and one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard, the line that still makes me laugh so much “oh look, Jogi’s lost his rain jacket.” I liked that moment so much I made a GIF of it, I just love the look on his face at that moment, I can’t help but wonder what he’s thinking.
The second video is a segment from the pre-match show about Jürgen Klinsmann, it’s one of my favourite Klinsmann related things ever partly because of the music (it’s Edvard Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King) and partly because of this:
It’s very fitting that it was last night I changed my mind about making this set of posts, it’s not just one year since the world cup right now, it’s also one year today that I started this whole enterprise. I like that it began on the 24th of 2014, perfect and to make it all the more so today’s first post was number 524, it wasn’t planned that way, for once I wasn’t counting. To make it even more perfect I got a new interview of Hansi today.
It’s funny that my first post was about Stalingrad, more specifically the release of it on blu-ray with the original German audio. It’s funny because I was all so excited about that back then. In a space of a few short weeks I no longer cared and eventually ended up cancelling my pre-order because I wanted to use the money for surprise surprise, Germany games on DVD. I still haven’t got a copy yet and the only Thomas I have any interest in now is of course Müller.
It’s not quite a Löw-versary, but I’ve got a good idea for something along those lines, a chapter of the Löw adventures detailing Jogi & Hansi’s one year anniversary celebrations. There’s just one thing I can’t decide and that’s the date of when such a chapter should be posted. Should it be posted in November which is when I wrote the first chapter or should it be posted around the end of summer when that chapter was set? That I cannot decide.
I really owe the daily prompt a lot of thanks on that count. I know they can sometimes be unoriginal and some of them feel very samey, but if it weren’t for that I might never have put pen to paper on this particular topic. Obviously I had the idea before then, but it was just a fun to think about idea, I’m not sure I ever would have actually done anything with it. Then along came that prompt “Trio no.4” and how could I resist. Given the ease with which I came up with that story I must have given the subject quite a lot of thought previously, probably more than I realised. It’s not the best thing I’ve written, by now it’s not even my most favourite piece but it will forever be the one that is the most special.
And the rest is history, it took on a life of it’s own and my latest Löw adventure is looking like it’s going to run to fifty pages. It’s probably not a good thing that I spend more time and put more effort into working on this than my android story, but what can I say, I fell in love with the idea of Jogi & Hansi, true Löw.
Anyhow, that’s enough rambling, the pictures:
