Food for the Soul (and the Stomach)

Tell us about your favorite meal, either to eat or to prepare. Does it just taste great, or does it have other associations?

I’m having a hard time choosing, my top two choices are Bratwurst and fish and chips. Both are favourites for how great they taste and for the memories they conjure up. In the case of Bratwurst it’s the Christmas market, late evening cinema trips, wonderful conversations on a cold winter night whilst we ate and enjoyed the atmosphere of the market. I’m not a fan of Christmas at all, but I do love the Germans and their markets. It also has a football connection, and not just because I like to eat Bratwurst or some kind of German hotdog on international weekends. No, it’s because of the first and only international game I’ve ever been to, against Azerbaijan, a long time ago, but I’ll always remember the hotdog and the flag I got as a gift, I still have the flag in fact.

Fish and chips I will always associate with the beach, with a feeling of freedom, a kind of happiness that can only be experienced in a few places. The freedom of summer, of pretending that you never have to go back to school or the real world ever again. Pretending that all that exists is the beach, the arcades and the many tasty treats that the seaside has to offer.

  1. Oh Gosh, eine leckere Bratwurst mit einem knusprigen Broetchen und viel Senf…Thank you now I am hungry 🙂

  2. I guess you aren’t a football fan then. I can’t begin to explain Jogi Löw and his scarves. Suffice to say, he’s not often seen without one.
